What is group?

Group therapy is one of the most effective means of personal growth and self-exploration. This form of therapy involves a small number of individuals (generally 5-8) who meet for 60-90 minutes every week. Group leaders work to facilitate discussions and strive to maintain a safe, confidential environment where members feel comfortable to discuss their concerns. Sometimes groups are time-limited and topic-focused, while others are open-ended and not focused on a specific topic. For some presenting issues, group therapy can be the preferred method of treatment (anxiety, trauma survivors, gender issues, relationships, personal growth).

Advantages of group?

Group therapy can be beneficial as it offers you the opportunity to meet with other students who share similar experiences, concerns, and desire for personal growth. Group offers you the chance to give and receive genuine support and honest feedback and increase your own self-awareness. Through group, you can experiment with new attitudes and practice new ways of coping with life's stressors. A group can also help you manage relationship issues and improve your interactions with other people. The thought of joining a group is intimidating and uncomfortable to some; however, it is important to remember that group leaders are well-aware of this and work to create a supportive and safe environment.

We need your help!

During the coming semester, Student Counseling Services will be soliciting feedback from MSU students to determine interest in potential groups. Check back periodically as group therapy options will be added throughout the semester. If you have any suggestions or questions regarding group therapy at Student Counseling Services, please contact the group coordinator, Dr.JaNae' Taylor at (662) 325-2091 or email at jtaylor@saffairs.msstate.edu
